On stage with Mo & the rays at Back to the city festival 2016
Back to the city 2016 was exciting! It was
my first Back to the city experience since relocating and I got the honour of
sharing a stage with Mo & the rays, there was nothing like it. Coming face to face with emcees whose work
has inspired, built me up and spoke to me over the years was just sentimental,
there are no words of describing it.
The whole event felt like a massive family
reunion I was surprised at the number of people I actually knew and whom knew me, it
was just crazy. I was seeing a lot of familiar faces, a lot of interesting
characters and it was liberating to be in the presence of people who chose to
come together under this unifying force of Hip Hop, people who delight in
similar sentiments andworld views and
it was really refreshing to be there. The day had me reminiscing of the times
when all that really mattered was those lyrics you kept on repeat in your CD
player responsible for getting you up in the morning, giving you some place in
your own mind that you could escape to whenever you needed it. That first time
you were actually exposed to what a dope verse was and got so encapsulated that you never
looked back since.
It
has always been about this medium of lyrical instrumentation when it came to
rap for me, the thrill of exploring our ability to move with rhythms, morph
into ideas and concepts, exhibit exhilarating and acrobatic flows n techniques,
skills and playing around with the different ways of delivering all that magic
has always excited me. For a good 7 years of my life at some point it was all I
could think, eat and sleep. I was just so damn inspired and all my creative
antenna’s were just charged. My journey has taken me through a host of lessons
and much of my enthusiasm for arts all together has drastically changed but
Wednesday was amazing none the less.
Started the morning off at a dress fitting
for Mo and then met up with the girls for a beer, couldn’t believe my
excitement the minute I saw Apple. We used to mission together in Durban a few
times meeting up at shows and doing the usual jameson pub runs. I hadn't seen
her in so long that It was just an absolute pleasure to run into her again at an occasion like this, reminded me of how small
the circle really is we'd keep reconnecting with the same faces over and over
again. From there on we went to run a few errands and collect the tickets, it
was such a process but all the events leading up to our time on stage made the
night as explosive as it turned out to be. It was a dope event!
